Author remembering save folder
D2

I could have sworn PSP used to remember where I last saved something
(not just the format of it) and take me back there again and again on
subsequent saves. Now it's going to where I got the file from instead
of where I've been putting them after working on them. Where's the
setting for this, anyone know?

Thanks in advance!

How are you commanding the save? File > Save As has always (PSP 7,

Save As. Guess I must have mixed up with something else... would be
nice, oh well thanks for letting me know.

Like Fred said . The File Export Jpeg, Gif and png optimizers always

Yeah - I'll have to train myself to use those instead. Thanks.

The optimizers are a better choice anyway as they give you more
flexibility in changing your save settings and observe what the
resultant file size on disc will be. This is particularly
important when saving jpgs, where you should use low compression
settings to avoid creating obvious artifacts in the saved image.

I've been using PSP for years (since ver 3) and I only just found out the
other day that in the "save Options under both "save" and "save as", PSP 8
has a radio button for JPG that allows you to save "lossless". I haven't
checked PSP 7 or 6 yet.

You do NOT want to save in the Lossless jpg format. That is the
JPG2000 format, for which there is also a choice in the Save
format dialogues dropdown list. This format is not supported by
very many programs at all and will result in most people not
being able to open your image.

When saving your image files, always use one of the other
lossless formats - tiff, png or psp. You'll need the psp format
if you want to also save layers and selections. You should only
save a copy as a jpg when needed - e.g., for the web or photo
kiosks/printing shops that require jpg format - and in those
cases you should be using the standard jpg format.

What about bmp? Is that not lossless?

It is. The other lossless formats provide better compression and at
least some metadata; therefore we recommend BMP only for transfer to
the occasional application that cannot handle the others.

Thank you for your reply. I'm aware which formats are lossless and which are
not, though I'm sure many people reading will be grateful for the
information.

In fact, I personally DO want to save in lossless JPG format, because:

1.) JPG is the only format I can use to save files for % of transparency
determined by the engine of a game I'm developing, and

2.) I need them to be lossless in JPEG format so that I can easily modify my
template images without further artifacting (in PSP), and test them in the
game engine. The game engine takes care of whether or not other people can
view my files. Personally I've been happy to finally have a way to do this
in PSP.

(If I sound *prickly*, I apologise. I tend to get that way when other people
tell me what I want or don't want) :`)

Given your usage I can see why you can use jpg2000. As you
didn't state a specific purpose, and as 99% of the people who
post with questions or comments use jpg for more generic purposes
(and those with jpg viewing problems usually are trying to view a
jpg2000 image), it was my assumption that you fit into that 99%
and I replied accordingly.

No offense taken really, Joe. I do appreciate what you're saying. I just
have to laugh at myself when I get prickly around well-meaning people. :`)

I'm wondering where the documentation is that tells us that choosing
"lossless" radio-button in the save and save-as options window will save it
as a JPG2000 file?

I'm not choosing to save as a "JPEG2000(*.jp2,*.j2c.*.j2k.*.jpc,*.jpx)"; I'm
choosing "JPEG - JFIF Compliant (*.jpg,*.jif,*.jpeg)", which is the one
right above JPEG2000 in the "save as type" list. Nowhere in the save options
does it say anything about it being JPEG2000 if you choose the radio button.

Being an old hand at this stuff yourself, perhaps you (or anyone else who
knows) can enlighten me (and any interested lurkers below). I'd much
appreciate it.

Thanks.

I wish I could enlighten you, but you are correct in that the
documentation isn't there in the PSP Help or Manual regarding
choosing Lossless becoming a JPG2000 file. You only know you're
doing so if you conciouslessly choose JPG2000 from the File
Format dropdown in the Save As/Save Copy As dilogues. It is a
fault of the documentation.

In defence of Jasc (those who produced PSP9), the documentation
as a whole is miles ahead of the documentation produced by Corel,
their successors, who released PSP X. :-)

*nods* How did you find out about it (if you don't mind satisfying my
curiosity)?

I downloaded X and tried it for just a few days, then took it off my
machine. From what I've heard here and on the Corel forums, I wouldn't touch
XI with a virtual bargepole. I tend to use 8 for everything except vectors,
for which I use 7.

If it ain't broke, don't even *pretend* to fix it. ;`}

If I find a copy of 9 somewhere I may add it to my collection. PSP X is the
first version to crash my machine. lol

I must admit that I have always found Corel products to be overly complex to
use, from their Corel Draw Suite to what they did with Word Perfect. Thank
heavens they didn't screw up Painter 9 too much.

As far as I know, there is only one lossless jpg format and
that's 2000, so Lossless on the dialogue had to be that :-)

If you do digital photography then 9 could be worthwhile for you.
The three main features it has over 8 is Digital Camera Noise
Reduction, Chromatic Aberration Removal, and Selective Undo in
the History palette.

I do a lot of photography (mostly digital these days)as references for my
work in fine- (real media) and digital- artistry. Those three additions to
my PSP favourite, Adjust > Auto Color Balance, could be useful. I love being
able to warm or cool a reference photo, to make it more closely resemble
what I started to do on site (plein air).

They could also help with the photo-records of the kazillions of pieces I've
done, some of which are on paper and have been damp-damaged thereby needing
some extra touch-up work.

Thanks for the tip. I'll keep my eye open for 9 in the Bargain Bins
hereafter. I feel really sad at th direction Corel has taken PSP. It was
unique; now it is becoming more like just another photo-fix-up program like
all the others.
