| I currently have Paint Shop Pro v 9.01. I received the offer to upgrade to
XI. I've read a lot of complaints in this group about X, and how some
prefer 9, and stay with it. Has XI been enough of an improvement over X to
make the upgrade worth while?
Thanks,
Bill Crocker

If you swing over to the PSPP XI newsgroup at cnews.corel.com you can read
the opinions of other users on this.
I have not seen that much improvement over X, they say they have fixed the
Browser but then I never was bothered with it to begin with. They added a
couple "new features" like Time Machine which gives different looks to
photos like old cameras did, but that is not anything you can't really do in
PSP X if you know how or have a plugin for.You might consider buying a cheap
copy of PSP X, I hear some are getting it free after rebates from various
vendors. I have used PSP since version 3 or so, and I don't at this time
plan to spend the money on version XI. Version X is great, I have not had
many of the reported problems with it since patching.
Of course, it will really depend on what you personally want to do with it.
If you want a one click fixer-upper, then version XI seems the way to go. I
know people who still stick with PSP 8 and swear that they don't need
anything else.

You can subscribe to various Corel newsgroups, including a new one
for v.XI, at cnews.corel.com .
In terms of features there is very little new in XI that wasn't in
v.X. The main change was to the browser, which is now an organizer
based, it appears, on Corel's new Snapfire. For many people, it's
worse than the original browser in v.X. But you can get all the
scoop over at Corel's groups.
I'll be staying with v.9.01

There's almost nothing new in the app, so no, not worth the time or money.

I've routinely downloaded the new version for a trial, and
then decoided whether the upgrade is worthwhile for me. I
haven't downloaded XI yet, and I'm not in a rush to do so.
The list of new features doesn't include anything I've been
looking for. (I'm using X now.)

I bought V9 for the noise reduction and AFAIK they have not done much
with that. It works well enough for me.
Ignored V X, because it did not excite me, probalems or not, and will
probably ignore VXI.
This is particularly because Corel have this mean way of forcing me to
buy a downloadable upgrade from the Aust agent at grossly inflated
prices and without the special offers.
USD $ 60 = Aud$80, but we pay Aud$130, to cover an agent we don't
need.
And they do not even seem to have it yet....hrmmpph. Sorry.

If you can find a copy of v.9, or even v.X (where the v.9 tools can
be found in Customize>Unused Commands and placed on any toolbar -
even a new one you create - it should be cheap and will likely be
better than Elements. Just don't bother with the new PSPXI.

Dave Symes, who was also disappointed with PSP, recommended I give it a
try, and, boy, it worked very well with photos!!! The problem with Jasc
and Corel is, they have no great photographers to test their software,
since all the great are using Photoshop and/or Elements!!

Gotta agree there, I've tried a couple of version of Elements, and I
always returned to v8/9 of PSP.
Even though I have the trial of XI installed, and it does have a few
tempting points, I'm still using v 9.01 for all my real work.
Except, at this moment in time I don't have a MS-Win PC at all... After
all that disk and processor thrashing with the new Organizer, my machine
became very uppity and is now in the repair shop.

No. I just finished writing a long email to Corel high lighting the
reasons that I would not upgrade, nor would I recommend the program.
For this release, the old adage to 'Create no additional damage!' was
forgotten. XI still has all of the warts and lumps of X, plus many
more.
So far, the only thing I've found that could possibly be called an
improvement is 16 bit adjustment layers, but there's still some doubt
about that. Corel hasn't published anything about 16 bit ability, and
the fact that saving 16 bit formats is nearly impossible is making it
very difficult to take any files to other programs to test.
Corel has added some 'Gee-Whiz' effects in order to call this a new
version, but almost all of the effects have serious defects that
effectively nullify any joy in the new effect. An example could be
the DOF filter, which is supposed to create a simulated Depth of Field
blur in backgrounds. The problem is that in order to keep the
foreground object in focus, you must create a freehand selection
around the object. You cannot use the normal Selection creation tools
in PSP to create the selection, you must create a new selection inside
the preview window. The Selection Editing features, the Cntrl and
Shift keys do not function inside the filter, and you cannot create a
selection at full size for any decent sized image.
And that's just one little problem! There are many more, including
broken Histogram Adjustment, Browser, Saves, hogging the cpu time,
etc.
I highly recommend that everyone stay far away from this puppy.
New users should be able to find version X for nearly free, and do
more than XI does. If 9 does the job for you, then by all means save
a few dollars and stick with it, you'll be much happier.

Hi Ron, how are you doing...............Not interested in buying any
updates past the 9 I have and it's such a mem hog, I don't like
running it on my old '98 any more, so eight does fine, and Painter
fills in. I wanted to ask you, what do you think the answer is to the
poor quality of 11 is it? Too small a team, not knowlegble enough
team, Poor guidance from manager? I've been on some engineering teams
before and that place musta been a mess. How did they CYA while
knowing it was AFU, just lie their way thru? Thanks, Greg.

I read that Elements 5 has deigned to grant we, the great unwashed,
Curves, and a different set of whiz-bang than PSP. They even mention
image editing once in a while.
Both seem to be setting us up for their partner file-sharing service.

The same is true of your immortal beloved Elements. I read an interesting
book about how technology is being ruined by "covergence", where the
companies try to "stand out" by cramming as many new (and quickly
imitated) features into their devices, rendering them too complicated to
be of practical use. The tech editor in the local paper is aways moaning
about how he can't buy a simple working phone any more.

Heart failure in spring required open heart surgery, spent all summer
recovering, and I'm now medically retired. Getting old is a XXXXX,
but better than the alternate.
There has been much speculation. Best guess seems to be that Corel is
hoping to attract more rank beginners by dumbing down everything, and
idiot button'ing everything. Not only does that clog a computer, and
burden it's cpu time, but implies that they only want to snag someone
before they become educated in computer graphics. Corel has
abandoned user loyalty, in favor of a quick buck.
The guys over at Adobe have been all smiles since XI came out. The
only thing that could possibly dim their day is the fact that Corel
announced PSPP a full month ahead of the new PSE. Once upon a time,
PS was always looking over the shoulder at PSP, now they don't need
to worry. PSPPXI is taking on the freebies that come with digital
cameras,,, (and failing.)

Sorry you had some trouble earlier this year, Ron. I have a Cyber
friend in FLA that's done FOUR multiple bypasses, the last one he
almost didn't wake up. So, I Thank God you are now well.
As to Adobe vs. Corel, I WILL be downloading the PS Elements 5.0
trial when it comes out and I have time. While PSP 9 does what I
want, it is clear that Corel no longer wants my money, they're
aiming at some unknown audience - and missing badly.

Had that heart thing in '98, and am still sliding down hill, won't go
thru that again. What's the last P in PSPPXI. Too bad they sold out,
but why did they do it, no one forced them to get greedy, did they. I
woulda defended psp to the death a while back, and much preferred it
to PS or Painter cause it could do 99% of what I wanted, but they
refused to listen and grow properly. I wish digi cameras had never
been invented.

You may wish to point your newsreader to the Corel groups, of which
one is specifically set up for v.XI. That way you will read input
from others and be able to share with others your own experience.
They are at corel.cnews.com.
