Author Selecting (only) line drawing
- Bob -

2006-08-28, 6:42 pm

I have a light black line drawing on a white background. It is one
layer. I need to darken up the drawing so that it shows up darker when
printing. It is one layer (imported item). I figured I could do this
with simple brightness/contrast if I could select just the lines and
not the background (pure white).

So, I am trying to select everything in the drawing except the
background. I feel fairly certain that the selection tool can do this
:-), but I can't seem to get the settings right. I've tried using the
magic wand but if I set it with a high enough tolerance to get the
entire drawing selected it picks up the white background too.

Is there some way to select everything in a one layer drawing that is
non-white ?

Thanks,
Trev

Yes, there are many ways, Magic Wand being just one. The best way
depends on the image and on your own taste. Without seeing the
image, all we can do is list other tools for you to try. (Why not go
over to the Corel PSP newsgroups, where you can attach a sample
image?) Since you do not say otherwise, I'll assume you are using
the current version of PSP.

1. Since you do not have color contrast to work with, try the Magic
Wand with Match Mode = Brightness.

2. Effects > Edge Effects > Erode.

3. Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Histogram Adjustment. Click
Reset to Default, then move the Low slider up to make dark greys
black.

4. Selections > Select All followed by Selections > Modify > Select
Color Range. Set the reference color to your dark grey, subtract it
from the selection, then invert the selection to leave the lines
selected for a flood fill.

Instead of worrying about all that selecting - try going to
Adjust>Brightness and Contrast>Threshold. Turn up the value to get blacker
blacks and whiter whites (and no shades of gray.) If you end up with any
stray black bits that you don't want, just paint them out with the Paint
Brush.

Press Ctrl+Shift+H to get Histogram Adjustment. In the graph part of the
dialog you'll see a peak somewhere in the middle, which is your grey
pixels, and under the graph there a three arrowheads. Drag the black
arrowhead to the right until it touches the grey peak on the graph. You
could also do this by setting the "low" value to 0.1%.

Nope. Just typed it in as I checked what I was doing in PSP X.

Layer modes=multiply, then if not black enough, do again.

Once you had black, you never go back.

It's there, but since you only have one layer, it won't work, even if you do
find it. ;-)))).

p.s. Look in the Layers Palette, to the right of the title for the
Background Layer. See the word "Normal"? If you have more than one layer,
you can click on the arrow to the right of "Normal" to access the Blend
Modes. Won't work on the Background or bottom layer, though.

Really? And on a single layer image, how is that different from Normal?
Screen caps, please.
