PSP X Install problem
|
|
| rfdjr1@optonline.net 2006-06-27, 8:41 pm |
| A week or so ago, I downloaded the trial version of PSP X and installed it.
Yesterday, I received a copy I purchased. So I uninstalled the trial version,
and installed the new version from the CD.
Now, whenever I start up my computer, there's a window open, looks like a
Windows Explorer window, that says Corel in the upper left, and nothing else is
in the window. But it's similar to what you'd see opening up Windows Explorer. I
can't figure out how to get rid of it, or rather stop it from showing up when I
boot up the system. Each time, I have to click the X in the upper right to get
rid of it, but when I reboot, there it is again. It's totally annoying and I'm
not happy about it. Any idea why this is happening and what I can do about it?
Thanks.

This is the first report of a blank screen there, which makes one
wonder if your CD installation might have been hosed elsewhere. I'd
try repeating it, just on that chance. The last thing you need is
corruption in the application.
Most likely, the screen is related to PSP calling home to check for
updates. Many customers have reported problems with this feature.
When it works, it delivers more advertising than updating. Many of
us turn it off and get our updates the old fashioned way by
downloading them when *we* want to from the Corel web site.
Before going further, there are three updates: 10.01, 10.02, and
10.03, that you should get and install. They are not cumulative, but
must be installed in sequence.
The first place to try to end the annoyance is File > Preferences >
Auto Update Options. Pick "Never Check Automatically." This may or
may not discourage PSP.
The second thing to try is to remove or shut down the InstallShield
Update Service, a drive-by download that comes with PSP 10. Do this
in the usual way with Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
The third thing to try is the complete clean-out offered by
InstallShield at
http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q111006.

Hey, Fred, been waiting for you here. We aren't in a censored NG

seem to have forgotten the unperson Spandex Rutebega who readily
admits she is a vegetable and not a person, and you forgot plenty

I was kicked from nowhere. Go look at CNews of late, XXXXface, I'm
alive and well and posting away. So that I can properly appreciate
YOUR words of wisdom, please tell me your handle there.
As to my alleged "silliness" here, I'd explain it to you but your
feeble brain is incapable of remembering a sentence or two, much
less comprehending their meaning.

You were censored, that is why you are pissed off now and being silly in

I have no need to tell you my name in that forum. Your need to be

Take a complete look at the thread 'Are some Corel newsgroups down' in
this NG. There is a subthread there where ol'Jerr admitted he was
booted from Cnews and then begged his way back on.

No, I was not censored at any time. I challenge you to produce
proof of that. "Tim" seems to think that too, and since he is a C-
Tech and may have access to the CNews Forum Manager's logs, he may
think he fingered me, but he did not. However, at the Forum
Manager's explicit request, I did forward Tim's posts and headers
from here and let him investigate if Tim did or did not access what
is most likely Corel confidential data.

free speech are not abridged, but I can track you through your
headers, so you needn't be concerned.

Good work! Thanks for the report. Do you think this came from Corel
on the CD? I did not get anything like that on mine, but that was
some time ago. The name sounds more like Microsoft.

Since everyone is at one point or other singled out by you for

MediaCheck.exe is the Photo Downloader part of Corel Photo Album 6. You
can turn it off by going to Tools > Options > Download in CPA 6 and
unchecking "Use Corel Photo Downloader to automatically detect new
media". If it is already running, there is also a system tray icon that
you can right click. Unticking all three options there will also prevent
it from loading on future boots. Right click the icon and select "Exit"
to close the current instance.

Hi Joske,
Seeing your post, I refreshed my reader to see what was going on
(I don't usually bother with Jerry's posts anymore). I was not
surprised to see that, here in usenet, his vulgar side (what he
describes as free speech) is just about all he displays. He uses
usenet to vent, not to help people with questions.
I also note that a couple of days ago he admitted he was sick and
that's why he keeps these adversarial things going. And then I
saw a post today where he admitted he gets his "kicks" (that's my
euphamism - he was more explicit) from these exchanges. It was
sad, and kind of off-putting, but one has to accept that some
minority find their pleasure where they can.
Might be best just to not reply to any of his posts, whether here
or in other groups, as he might get the same "satisfaction" even
in groups where he might have to be polite. Just getting a
response to a post might be enough for him. As I said, sad and
off-putting, but that's one reason I don't respond to any of his
stuff.
Just a thought, and only suggested because yours is the first
reply to him that I've seen from the normal users in this group,
and is what prompted me to search back to see what was happening
- which is obviously the same old stuff as regards Jerry.
I do still come here to try to answer stuff from people looking
for PSP help (what little I can provide) and direct them to the
Corel group. But that's just me.
Regards,
JoeB

Read the First Amendment, Joe. It applies everywhere except on
CNews, for two reasons: Corel is foreign-owned and the NGs are on
their private server, both of which are plenty to censor as they
please with absolutely no recourse if something goes bump in the
night, as it did with me.
> displays. He uses usenet to vent, not to help people with
> questions.
Not being a spin meister nor Corel shill nor a super expert, it
is rare that I can beat the "experts" to helping an OP that
already isn't too stupid to live, but perhaps you should also
review when I do help people, both here and on CNews, instead of
immediately assuming the worst.
> I also note that a couple of days ago he admitted he was sick
> and that's why he keeps these adversarial things going.
I am sick. Sick of imbeciles. But, Joe, you should know by now
that no one - certainly not me - is going to tell anyone the
truth on Usenet, so you believe what you like as to what "sick"
is, but I can tell you, it ain't mental illness, no matter how
much you'd like to put me in a looney bin.
And

Yep. So, why aren't you also telling mrs. joske about what was
said to me, and why? Talk about sad. People here obviously have
more time on their hands than brains to handle it.

Too bad the vegetable doesn't show up here, I've got a few very
well chosen words for "her"!

mrs. joske has /never/ been a "normal user" or even a normal
person, so why do you defend her obvious aberrant behavior?
> I do still come here to try to answer stuff from people

Yeah, I saw your "help" earlier - jumping down some idiot's
throat for cross-posting, as if somebody just died and made you
net nanny of the world.
> Regards,
>
Joe, people here need to learn to behave. You'd be surprised what
a nice guy I am when I am treated with respect. But, being as how
I view a good offense and the best defense, I can and will
continue to stomp the shit outta anybody dumb enough to take me
on.
Your suggestions are good one. Usually, by now, I see lots of
"Plonk!" in replies, but this time is different. It is as if a
dozen twits suddently developed a bad case of OCD.
Now, for you, Fred, M, Tim, anybody else, if you have proof of
what actually did happen on CNews, post it. I talked personally
to Keith Trottier for over 20 minutes. I don't know if Corel
records conversations, but they probably do. I don't think
Canadian law requires prior notification as it does here, so I
really don't know (and don't really car). I certainly did. So, I
really don't give a shit what people think did or did not happen
or why, and I sure as hell am not going to tell them - far more
fun to watch the twits twist in the wind with their wild-XXX
guesses. But, I have taken Keith up on his strong encouragement
to report any instances of bad behavior on CNews to him, and I
have also reported what goes on here when I think somebody
somehow got access to confidential logs.
Come to think of it, "Tim" suddently stopped posting to CNews
about the day I called Keith. You think? Nah!

I challenge you to prove even 1% of any of this rediculous crap.
Why don't you call Keith yourself, I'm sure he'd be glad to spill
the beans. I will share one tidbit, he said something to the
effect that "I don't want to see CNews turn into a chat room",
and about that very day, the tit-for-tat stopped, so I'm just a
guessin' that he started deleting posts and revoking posting
rights. But, what do I know?
