Animated jpg's: Any such thing?

I'm working on a website and in the past have used animated gof files, using
Animation Shop in PSP 8. However, since the original pictures I start with are
jpg, and I have to convert them to gif, they lose color and get very grainy. So
I started to wonder can you make animations with jpg files and keep the quality
of the pictures? I'm working with actual photographs. Is it possible in
Animation Shop or is there another program to do this? Thanks.

No. JPG does not support animation. To animate photo-quality images
you can look into Flash, though. For typical photo sizes, it will
require your clients to have fast Internet connections. Some
fraction of users find Flash annoying enough to disable it. (I'm one
of them.)

First, Fred is correct that AS and similar programs only animate
gifs.

As for flash, if you do want to do animations using flash you can
consider programs that will write .swf files that are much less
expensive than the Flash software and more intuitive (i.e.,
easier to learn). I use Swishmax for my flash stuff (just google
it if you're interested).

I only suggest flash movies as an alternative to gif animations
if you are only going to use the animation in the same way gif
animations are generally used - i.e., as a small portion of a web
page containing the animation, not to create complete pages or
websites. They can then be reasonably small in download size,
and most of the page will be straight html.

I should have been more specific, in case it has a bearing on the replies I get
here. What I'm doing is taking ten or twelve jpg pictures, about 400x250 pixels
in size, and running them in sequence, with fade outs, wipes, blinds, etc. You
can see what I did with the gif files on the website at:

I started thinking after my original post that you might think I'm talking about
little characters dancing, etc. I called what I'm doing animations only because
I used Animation Shop to make them. Thanks.

Have you considered using something like Corel's Photo Album that allows you
to create slideshows or use other types of templates? You can then stick
with using the jpg files, just compress them somewhat to save file size.
Another option to consider would be to use some scripts that are freely
available on the web (might require a link-back) to display the images? Java
would be one option... here is a link for one that will display different

I have used the dynamicdrive one myself, although it was some time ago. Had
pretty good luck with that though. Google "image scripts" and you can get
several other sites as well. :) Playing devils advocate <g> and referencing
Fred's post, some people (surfers) feel the same about Java and scripts as
they do about animations so use with caution. :))

Yes they are called Mjpeg. motion jpeg. low frame rate movies of the type
taken by still digital cameras.

Much bigger file size them animated gif of course.

So as its a movie you will need a video editing programme. and save as mpeg.
