Fix Clone Brush To One Spot

| Is it possible to force the clone brush source to stay put (ie exactly
right I right-click) while I paint other areas of the image? I want
the texture from a small area to be paint over a much larger area, and
at the moment I keep having to specify the source area when I move to
another area to be painted with the same thing.
Or, is there anyway to pickup a texture and paint with it?

There are a couple of ways, but this one might be the easiest, and would
give you a lot of control options....
What about selecting the area of the texture, copy and pasting it to a new
image, then using that image as your source material in the Materials
palette? Then you could use any brush you wanted to "clone" with.

Oh, and for you newbies, JP goes to all the Photoshop seminars. She's
not a faithful PSPer. But, then again, who is?

If I understand your question right, you could "save as" the image your
working on with a slightly different name such as vers2, then with that on
the screen open the original again and you'll have two identical images on
screen. With the second (original) image highlighted, click on clone brush
and de-select the "aligned" box in the far right corner of the clone tool
toolbar. Then right click on the source area in the image that you want to
clone. Go to the area in the "vers2" image that you want to change and left
click to clone the area from the source. The source area will not move
because you've told it to not stay aligned with the movement of the cursor.
That's the way it works for me.

Something seems to be wrong, that doesn't seem to work.
I have opened the image (A), and then hit CTRL+C > CTRL+V to copy and
paste a new image (B), rather than doing a 'Save As'. I then removed
the tick from 'Aligned Mode' and selected the source for the clone
brush with a right mouse click in iamge (B). However when I left click
to apply the brush in image (A), the source still moves around in (B).
I'm not sure what 'Aligned Mode' is supposed to do (I cant find the
detailed help for the clone tool), but it doesn't seem to have any
effect, whether its on or off... Even if I try it in the same image,
the source still moves around.
?

Mark the Aligned mode check box to have the Clone Brush tool paint
from the point of the source area relative to the first point you
clicked on the target area each time you stop and start paint_ing
again. You can keep clicking and dragging over the target area to fill
in the source image.
Clear the check box to have every click copy the same data.
If you click and drag with 'Aligned' check box clear it works as if it
was ticked

Part of your trouble is due to your insistence on using the wrong
tool--Clone--to paint with texture. Do what JP says: put a texture
in your Materials Palette and paint with the Paint Brush or the
Airbrush. (BTW, her site http://www.jpkabala.com is full of good PSP
stuff.) For more about this, search Help for texture. Search
http://www.psplinks.com/ to see many examples of the technique.
It is too bad that Corel gutted its documentation to maximize
profit. In this case, however, the crux of Aligned mode is covered.
"If you want the Clone Brush tool to reset the source point each
time you resume painting, mark the Aligned mode check box." Perhaps
an example will help.
Aligned/unaligned affects where clone brushes (in PSP and all other
editors AFAIK) pick up their source material at the *start* of each
stroke. During the stroke, the source point moves the same in either
mode.
A B C D E F G H
With the brush big enough to cover one letter, right click on A,
then left click on D. PSP paints an A over the D in either mode.
Now left click on F. What happens? In unaligned mode, the source
point remains at A and PSP paints an A over the F. In aligned mode,
the source point moves the same distance and direction that you
moved between D and F. That is, the source point moves from A to C
and PSP paints a C over the F. In other words, the source point
stays aligned with the destination point. Please take a screen snap
of this message and try it.
Tom was mistaken. This behavior is the same whether the source point
is in the same image or a different image.

And what you say makes sense and I would think should be the way it would
work. But for some reason on my version of PSP8, I can only get the
unchecked align box have an effect if I'm working with two images with
slightly different names. Might have something to do with my inability to
understand layers completely or something. One of the tutorials within the
program covered how to do this...I think it was on coloring black and white
photos using color from a color photo to get the flesh tones.

The name of the files from which you opened the images should not
affect the way the tool works. Perhaps you opened one image, then
did Windows > New to open a second view of the same image. In that
case, changes will appear in both views as you work.
Without knowing more about the characteristics of your images, the
tutorial you are trying, where you are in it, what you expect to
see, and what you do see, I cannot guess more.
Is your version PSP 8.10? If not, an update is in order, although I
do not recall any trouble with Clone being fixed there.
Please try the tool with one or two test images, both containing
just the Background layer. That will eliminate any differences due
to the Sample Merged setting.

Well it works OK in 9 and X for me. With no tick in the Aligned Mode
box the source remains in a fixed position as long as you click on the
target (once or several times). If you click and drag then the source
moves but at the end of the drag the source returns to its original
point.
With Aligned Mode ticked the source moves relatively to the target
movement.
