Author How to join two maps at border?
Terry Pinnell

2005-06-14, 7:51 pm

I live just on the border of West Sussex and Surrey (with Kent not far
away either). I've made two JPGs of the border area from an aerial
map-viewing program plus CD, showing each county. I've illustrated
these with the following extracts (GIFs for economy of size):
http://www.terrypin.dial.pipex.com/...Home-Surrey.gif
http://www.terrypin.dial.pipex.com/...ome-WSussex.gif

What is the easiest way to create a combined JPG from the two separate
JPGs please? FWIW, that grey seems to be a mixture of various greyish
colours.

None of that is of any significance. The approach would be the
same if you lived in the outskirts of Ulan Bator or on the Plains
of Abraham or if you were pasting together images of something
other than maps.

You can make small JPEGs just as well if not better.

What is your difficulty? The obvious way is to add a border to
the first image (Image > Add Border) and then Edit > Copy and
Edit > Paste > Paste As New Layer the second image onto the newly
created space or border. Alternatively, you could create a new
image large enough to hold both map images and paste each of them
into the new image as a layer. Why is that not working for you?
Is something else the problem for you? (By the way, once you open
the images in PSP they are no longer JPEGs.)

> FWIW, that grey seems to be a mixture of various greyish

Yes, but so what? Why is that causing you difficulty? You
can match the grey in one image to the grey in another image
by using the Manual Color Correction filter and sampling the
grey from the first image while applying it to the second if
that is our problem. Alternatively you can use the Background
Eraser to erase all the grey in each of the map images before
assembling them together. Frankly, I don't really understand
what your problem is and why it isn't trivially easy for you
to do what you want. Perhaps if you explained why this task is
hard for you I could give some more apposite advice. You can
also look for tutorials on making a collage if you need more
help than I've given.

Are you always so provocative? Did you ever hear of the terms
'background', or 'explanatory introduction'? Have you ever seen a
thread in which someone launches straight into a technical question,
followed by several responses asking 'what are you trying to do?' or
'please clarify your objective'?

As easily as just a one-click selection of GIF as file type in the
File>Save As dialogue? Better?

If it had been 'obvious' (to me, not you), then I wouldn't have taken
the trouble to prepare and publish those screenshots and post my
query.

That 'obvious' approach doesn't work here. Whether I paste as
selection or layer, one or other of the two grey areas hides that
section of the other county. Or have you omitted some even *more*
obvious step that I should have taken? How do I in effect make the
grey area transparent?

Perhaps *that* is the even more obvious step I should have known about
- the prior use of the Background Eraser? Is that really 'the easiest'
solution? BTW, wouldn't that leave me with the same problem with a
different background colour?

It's 'hard' for me because I haven't done it before. I'm sure that it
will appear 'trivial' once I've accomplished it.

-------

For others who may have a similar requirement, and end up here, one
relatively simple approach I discovered after further experiment was
this:

1. Create a new image large enough for both sections
2. In Map A, use Magic Wand just outside border to select the hybrid
grey colour of the 'missing county'.
3. Invert that selection
4. Copy and paste that as a new selection to the waiting empty image
5. Repeat that with Map B
6. Tidy up any traces of remaining border (yellowish in my example).

That would work, however, you don't need to create a new image and
paste both selections onto it, you could just create a selection with
the magic wand from one image then copy and paste it to the other
image, there would be less possibility of error that way.

Removing the grey with the background eraser from both images, copying
one as a layer, adding it as a layer to the other and merging the
layers would probably be more accurate. Try it, you'll find that
removing the grey that way will leave you with the canvas as background
so that it wont obscure what is under it when layered on top of the
other. In fact you should only need to remove the grey from the top
layer. You could even create a layer from one, paste it as a layer
over the other and use the background eraser to reveal the county
underneath showing through from the bottom layer.

By the way, you may find you are better off using the PSP newsgroups at

Kris may be brusque at times, but, he is a mine of very useful
information as he was involved with much of the development of PSP and
normally contributes greatly to the PSP newsgroups on a volantery

the easiest way I know to do it is to make a new image big enough to fit
both in then add both images as layers then erase the gray section on one
line the edge up to match the other half then merge all

ok just tried it to make sure on sizes you will need to resize the surry gif
to 70 percentof original size to do that and make it join right

Thanks, yes, I got the scales out of balance. Didn't think it was as

both counties to exactly the same degree, so should be matched now.

Sorry, but, I thought that was just the way you had made the gifs, it
never occurred to me that you had two original files at different
scales, would have thought the firm would have supplied adjacent areas
at same scale.

It was obvious that one was enlarged at a different percentage than the
other. One was starting to get pixelated while the other one was less so.

Sheesh.

You people do the lamest things and then wonder why you have crappy results,
