Using PSP8, it seems that if I export a jpg to a standard jpg, it
retains the EXIF info, but if I export it to a progressive jpg, it
loses it. Is this the way it's supposed to work?

That is the way PSP works. You'll notice that the jpg optimizer
dialogue with the Save Exif checkbox says specifically "Only
available with standard format". That's your clue.

You can try Exif stripper/saver programs like Exifer, which will
allow you to strip and save the Exif data from the image, and
then allow you to restore it after you've saved the file.
However, I don't think (with Exifer at least) that all of the
Exif data will be restored if the file is save in progressive
format, only some of it. You can check it out. Type exifer in
google to find the program if you're interested. It is
postcardware.

Ah, I see that now, it was grayed out before. Thanks for pointing this
out to me. I usually choose standard or progressive depending on which
gives me the smaller file size, but now I have another factor to
consider.

Yes, if you have previously selected progressive the warning
about saving exif only in standard will be greyed out because it
wouldn't be applicable to your present settings. The PSP dialogue
remembers your last used settings.

Yep, those FREE applications are always required, when owning Paint Shop
Pro.
