Thanks for reading..

The clone tool (and the paintbrush) give a strange finish. Like you
need to go over something many time to get the area fully covered.
I've tried everything to get it back to normal but no luck.
Is this a setting somewhere, or should I re-install?

Thanks - Kirk

Yes, it is the settings on the Tool Option palette. From what you
wrote, it could be Opacity < 100%, a Blend Mode not equal Normal, or
a very low Density. When in doubt, click Presets and then the curved
Reset to Default arrow.

It'll be great to have this sorted. It's been driving me mad for
weeks!

The Toop Option palette is the box that comes up, relative to the
current tool, when you press 'O' ?

With my version (PSP7) there doesn't seem to be a Blend option or any
presets or curved reset. I do remember seeing that somewhere but
can't find it now.

Also the effect is present on more than just the Clone brush and
paintbrush. It's also on the spraycan, and possibly other tools.

Could you giv me some specific steps to find it please? I have been
using PSP for many years but only with the bits I know and have
all kinds of trouble with the help feature.

Thanks - Kirk

Also make sure you don't have any textures selected in the color palette.

Thanks Kiri, it changed something but it still isn't right. Now I get
a decent 'blob' when I click, but I can't move the cursor around like
I used to.

I may just un-install and re-install it. Bloody Pain! Couldn't find
the presets and stuff Fred mentioned.

BTW - is there a tutorial anywhere on layers. They don't work how I
imagine they should - and PSP's help is no help. I need an 'overview'
type description - right from scratch on what/how it does.
I imagined each 'layer' be a seperate entity and you work on the
selected one, then merge together; with maybe an option to send to
back - top etc.

Thanks if anyone can assist.
Cheers - Kirk

When you have the Clone tool active, you'll should see a palette that
has the places to set size, hardness, step, density and so on. This is
the Tool Options palette. If you don't see it click on View > Palettes >
Tool Options or press F4 (you may need to press an F Lock key to get the
function keys to work as function keys rather than shortcuts to Undo,
New, Open etc)
At the left end of the Tool Options palette there is the word "Presets:"
with the Clone Tool icon and a small arrow head under it. Click the icon
or arrow head and the Presets list will open. On its right hand edge
there are 4 icons, the second one down shows a curved arrow, and if you
hover the mouse pointer over it the tool tip will read "Reset to
default". Click this to reset the Clone tool to its default setting. All
of PSP8 and 9 tools have this same reset button in Presets on their Tool
Options palettes. The same Reset button is found on nearly every dialog
box... for instance click Effects > 3D Effects > Buttonize and you'll
see the same curved arrow at the top beside the drop down list of
presets.

Have a look at http://www.psplinks.com click "Search" and type in Layers
as the search term. You'll find a number of tutorials about layers...
mostly for earlier versions, but generally still relevant.

If you can't find the presets and stuff Fred mentioned, then that
means you don't have your tool options palette visible. F4, or
View>Palettes>Tool Options.

Given the brief summary of layers you gave above, you already
seem to know what they are. I suspect you also do not have your
Layers palette visible (F8, or View>Palettes>Layers.

In Help, under the Index tab, scroll to Layers. There are
multiple sub-headings, with everything from the basics to blend
modes, etc. If you're having problems understanding some aspect
of this information, write back with which ofthese help items you
need more help with.

Angela says there's a big lack of tutorial for PSP-8 and above, because
no one uses them.

That wasn't Angela... it was those voices in your head. Keep taking your
medication and they'll go away.
