Help with PSP9 preferences

| Recently I went into preferences, to customize the work area and the way the
tools operated. Unfortunately now when I use a drop down box (effects,
selections, layers etc.) I only get a choice of two or three items to choose
from, rather than having all items displayed, without having to use the
dropdown arrow at the bottom of the list.
Can someone help me by advising where the option is for this setting?
thanks in advance.

| Thanks so much to you both, so simple, yet so frustrating...
