System restore points in Win XP + PSP 5
|
|

| Hello!
Besides PSP 8 (which seems to be sometimes unstable) I'm still running
PSP 5.03 under Win XP (+SP2). But from time to time the system restore
(sr) service of XP stops (error "0xC0000056" with event-id 1: The System
Restore filter encountered the unexpected error "0xC0000056" while
processing the file "graph.lnk" on the volume "HarddiskVolume1". It has
stopped monitoring the volume.) and all old sytem restore points are
deleted. So I've manually to set a new system restore point.
This phenomena occurs sometimes when I work with PSP 5.03 (thumbnail
viewer). It seems to be a problem with the 'file history' function of
PSP because the error is caused by .lnk files. (i.e. links to folders
containing graphic files with thumbnails). A similar problem was
reported by Microsoft for the history of the Real Player, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=812119
Is anything similar known for PSP 5.03?
Thanks and best regards,

Do you have the PSP 8.01 and 8.10 maintence releases
installed? Any video card problems? PSP 8.10 has been rock
solid for the Ivory Soap crowd (99 44/100% of users).
Please elucidate so somebody can help you debug your
crashes.

I've installed PSP 8.10 and normally no problems with other applications
and my video card (integrated chipset nVidia nForce 420D). But sometimes
PSP (e.g. the thumbnail browser) crashes straight to the desktop. Maybe,
not enough RAM memory (384 MB - 32 MB for graphic cache: 352 MB) And PSP
5.03 is faster on my machine, for most of my work I don't need the
additional features of Version 8.

You're within the specs for RAM, although 512 would be
better. As to speed, 5 is 1/5 of 7 which is 1/5 of 8. Are
you talking about launch speed, which is irrelevant if it
doesn't crash on you, or are you talking about execution
speed? If the latter, what?
And, have you called (not E-mailed) Tech Support. With an
easy-to-dup crash like you're getting, they will probably
be able to help you out on the phone.

Yes, launch speed is much slower. And there are problems with the TWAIN
connection to my HP scanner. PSP 5 works fine, so I do scanning with PSP
5 and image reworking with PSP 8.

This will be a very long (i.e. expensive) distance call so I avoided
contact by phone.
