Author How to access Corel connubities?
ember@operamail.com

I've taken a month holiday from newsgroups but can't seem to climb on
board again.

1. Going to the Usenet server cnews.corel.com via Agent 2.0 I get a
"no such newsgroup" message. The last time I was there a few months
ago I was able to download the then-current newsgroup list and
download messages but no luck now. There were no PSP groups at that
time.

2. Going to the URL for newsgroups from the corel.com website I can
see the list of all the newly added PSP groups but:

- Using my usual browser Opera I can read the headers but get a
message "message body not downloaded." I've waited up to a
half-minute or so. Reading headers only is not so exciting :-)

- Using IE I get the message "Windows cannot find
news://cnews.corel.com/corel. Paint Shop Pro 9"

3. The former news server "news.jasc.com" has no response. Could it
be that Gage was fibbing when he said it would be back up in the near
future?

Can someone update me on what's going on? I prefer to use Usenet, not
a clumsy web spinoff of Usenet.

Thanks,
Ember

For those not in the know, "connubities" is the new hot web term for
communities.

Do you have cnews.corel.com set as a separate account? Gage made an error
when he said the jasc site would be up shortly... still waiting. The web
side works though.

No. That link yields "Unable to find group corel.PaintShopPro9."

Thanks Samantha. No I don't have a "separate account." I think you
are using OE terminology, a program I don't use. I just manually
type-in the server's name I want into Agent. That has always worked
in the past.

And the web side does not work for me as I said in my posting.

cnews.corel.com is working for me in Outlook Express, so if it will not
work in Agent I suggest you switch to OE or Mozilla Thunderbird. Don't be
stubborn. :-)

Are you trying to log in to the news server with a username and password?
I'm able to view it without any authentication.

I just tried it in Xnews, that worked too.

Cnews is not part of usenet, it's private server that can't be accesed
through your news account and you will indeed have to set up a
separate account which isn't easy in Agent. I suggest you run a
separate incidence of Agent and point it to the newserver
cnews.corel.com

If you're saying you have done this in User and System Profile already
you might need to refresh the groups (Online>reresh groups list, since
Corel deleted all the old groups sometime prior to Christmas and
started new ones.

That message indicates you are trying to access cnews.corel.com as a Newsgroup and not as a server.

There are spaces in that URL that shouldn't be there. Try
"news://cnews.corel.com/corel.PaintShopPro9".

It works for me, bringing up my newsreader, Xnews, and going straight
to the specified server and newsgroup.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. cnews.corel.com is working fine
now in Agent. I must have incorrectly mis-specified the login method
to be used.

I still can't access the web side as noted in para 2 above, but this
is of no concern as I don't like web boards in general. The problem
there may become apparent to me down the road.

Thanks again

In Ver 2 of Agent the server one wants is specified in Options (a main
tab) /General Preferences / Host Name and Login Preferences. I think
I screwed up on the Login Preferences part

Multiple copies might be the way to go. That would avoid typing in the
info for each server change with the possibility of mistakes but old
habits die hard, and it has worked for a few years now. For better or
worse I have one database and one list of newsgroups for all servers.

AFAIK setting up a new account in Agent is just a matter of typing in
a new host name into the box and selecting a login method from a
dropdown menu. The info is not stored as an account. There is no
formal account setup procedure I am aware of. But when Forte issue
their multiple server upgrade there will probably be a procedure.

There is a Corel web board at:
http://tinyurl.com/2pt9o
Scroll down to find the PSP groups.

Yes the Jasc one is still running at
http://forums.jasc.com/default.asp
but there is little activity. I can access it though.

Oh no there isn't :¬) those are just links to the newsgroup which will open

That fooled me. I didn't know such a thing was possible. If it looks

seems.

Yes you can do that but you need to do it everytime you want to logon
to a different server. There is a hack to the ini file I think that
will allow you to work around that, a different ini file for each
account if memory serves but I find multiple installations works fine
and since I have 2 200gig hard drives I don't begrudge the space. The
reason I never bothered to upgrade to Agent 2.x was the fact that they
didn't provide for a convenient multiple account setup, a major
shortcoming in what is an otherwise excellent program especially since
Agent has been around since the early 90s.
