Irfan will open just about anything.

Irfanview requires the "formats" plugin to be able to read psp files.

I recommend installing all the Irfanview plugins anyway - they're quick,
small and easy to install and some of them will occasionally be useful.

It will only show you what's on the background raster layer, if there is
one. For all intents and purposes, you need to open the PSP file with Paint
Shop Pro.

What version of Paint Shop Pro do you have? If it's made for a newer
version, you'll have to get the proper version of PSP. The latest is 9.01.

A recent thread covers a recovery done by myself and Coder Droid. If
it's *image* layers you want to recover, you can try installing this
plugin: http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/#pspformat (it works in
Photoshop or PSP9).

If doing this in PSP9, you will probably need to rename your file with
a .PSP extension first, then in the Open dialog, be sure to choose
"Files of type: Paint Shop Pro" (*not* "Paint Shop Pro Image" just
below, which is the build-in handler). This should make PSP use the
plugin. If the layers can be read, you will see a dialog with a menu of
layers. Choose and save one at a time.

To save future confusion, you should remove the plugin when you're done
(it's not normally needed in PSP of course!)
