Even if they introduce a new one, it's almost inconceivable that Jasc
would cease to support the existing plugin interface, so I'd have
little hesitation in starting your project on that basis.

That's a cute suggestion but it's the monopoly-holder who wags that
tail. However I remain amazed at how successfully the aging PS API has
become a de facto standard - due to its publicly documented heyday, of
course. This page, for instance, lists only a fraction of the
compatible hosts:
http://thepluginsite.com/knowhow/tu...ngAvailable.htm
As a reaction to this phenomenon I suspect a new incompatible API will
be in the offing from Adobe sooner or later.

| Their current API is already incompatible. Another thing they did was charge $195 for the SDK which used to be free.
Still is if you happen to have a copy of PS5.

I'm not sure what you mean?
All I need is a well documented API, I'd rather not get
involved in the source for it!
Or maybe I misunderstood...?

In what way? They have probably made some minor extensions, but plugins
built with the 4,5,6 SDKs work fine in 7 and CS (and PSP, etc).

I looked at this a year or two ago, and Adobe had stopped supplying
the "classic" ADOBE plugin SDK and you had to pay for a "new and
improved" SDK which is incompatible with, for example PSP.
I cannot remember more detail, but if yo go to the Adobe site you'll
probably be able to find out more.

Yes, that is well known. What I am trying to convey is: this doesn't
stop anyone making plugins for PS7 and CS using the older SDKs, since
*it's not incompatible*. The vast bulk of the interface is unchanged.
Furthermore, such a plugin will also run under PSP (etc), as well as
earlier versions of Photoshop of course, so you can support everyone,
for no extra effort.
This benefits the developers, since we don't have to worry about
supporting multiple incompatible APIs; and it benefits end users,
because they aren't arbitrarily excluded from either platform, and
remain freer to choose. There are no losers here. (The loser in any
"lock-in" strategy is, as always, the guy who shells out for that
vendor's product.)

Yes, I think you are right.
