News.Individual.NET Terminates Free News Service
|
|
| Canopus 2005-02-15, 11:22 pm |
| For anyone reading this newsgroup via News.Individual.NET and have not
heard, they will no longer be supplying a free news service after April 1
2005 (I hope this is not a sick April fools prank). Quote:
Dear users of News.Individual.NET,
effective from April 1th, 2005, use of News.Individual.NET will
not be free of charge anymore. The news service will continue as
a fee-based service.
The details:
============
Effective immediately, registration for our news service is only
possible through our web site:
http://news.individual.net/
Registration by e-mail (as hitherto) is no longer possible.
Holders of existing accounts who want to continue using their account
need to convert it into a pay account. This is also only possible
through our web site:
http://news.individual.net/
You will also find all details on payment options, terms of use, and
terms of contract on the web site.
The time until March 31th, 2005, is a transitional period so that
holders of existing accounts will have plenty of time for convenient
conversion. Sign-up for new accounts or conversion of existing accounts
made within the transitional period (before April 1th, 2005) will not
cause any disadvantages:
Contracts concluded within the transitional period will last until
March 31th, 2006 (Annual Subscription) or June 30th, 2005 (3 Months
Subscription) without additional costs. Then the contracts will auto-
matically renew themselves for another year or another three months
respectively.
Important notes:
Effective from April 1th, 2005, all non-converted accounts will stop
working.
Users who use the server News.CIS.DFN.DE as part of the DFNNetNews
project are not effected by the changes described above. Nothing will
change for these users, they do not need to do anything.
The fee:
========
The fee for an account for News.Individual.NET is 10 EUR per year
(annual payment), that converts to only 0.84 EUR per month. The price
includes VAT at 16%.

Anyone know of a newsserver as good as News.Individual.NET that is free?

I've been using NIN for some while now, it's a very reliable and fast news
service.

No: and I would suggest that at the equivalent of £0.019 ($0.036) per
day its pretty good value.

From their FAQ
11. Which limits of posting are on the newsserver ?
The newsserver can support 4 IP connections for single user and a
total of 500 users connected at the same time. The limits of download
is fixed in 500 Mbyte/day
Not quite in NiN's league :-)

Yeah, I just got my notice today. Can anyone suggest another third
party news server? My ISP admits their service isn't that great. Maybe
it is time to switch ISPs.
I have tried Google (old Deja News). Lots of problems with that,
especially lack of options in reply format, inability to edit quoted
message.

Are the yankees on this newsgroup too poor to spend $10 a month on a
decent pay news server .

I'm British and yes, I find $10 per month a bit much to access four
newsgroups, two on a regular basis. Mind you 10 Euros per year is worth
thinking about :-)

This has come up in two separate newsgroups and seems to be worth a look at.

How much a month do you spend on newspapers that are read in less than=20
30 minutes and then chucked away .
=A38 a month comes to =A32 a week for something you use for hours at a time=
=20
each day .
It really all depends on what way you look at it .

Nothing, I read my news on the net via such as Guardian Online.

Where's the £8 per month coming from? it's 10 Euros per year. I definitely
wouldn't consider it at £8 per month, but, will at 10 Euros per year.

Yes Sharon, direct from them. Have you changed your mail address since
registering with them or something. I ditched one mail account once due to
too much spam on it and then missed a mail from them when they changed their
server's name. Took me ages to figure out why I couldn't connect.

I got one, but yahoo treated it as spam (no idea why) so it got filtered

It's been such a long time since they sent out a mailing that perhaps people
were reporting them as spam considering they were asking for money. Maybe
Yahoo saw "Account" "Subscription" etc. and you have the Yahoo spam filter
set too high. I never use the Yahoo spam filter, if any gets through I
submit it to SpamCop.

Maybe they are sending it out in batches and haven't got to your address
yet. I just checked up using a link from an old mail from them in case this
was a scam and there is a notice posted on their Home Page at
