Author How to screen capture from a DVD?

I can't seem to screen capture from a DVD using PSP 8. I'm using PowerDVD
4.0, and when I have PowerDVD running in window mode (not full screen) and I
try to do a screen capture from PSP, a really strange thing happens. The
PowerDVD window gets captured in PSP, but the new image in PSP doesn't show
the frame that it should have captured. Instead, it is showing the movie
being played, as if I was looking at the PowerDVD window. And when I try to
save the new image, and then re-load it, the PowerDVD window is completely
black. What's going on here?

You need to do the capture from within PowerDVD and save the output as a BMP
file. If you look on the DVD Bar there should be a button that looks like a
camera or something for doing that.

OK, that kinda works, but now there's another problem. I do the screen
capture and then paste it into PSP as a new image, and the image ends up being
compressed horizontally. I had tried capturing someone's face, and their face
is much thinner than it should be.

Some videos are letterbox or even SCUD these use over sq or rectangular
pixels. DVD players and software players know how to Handel them but
computers like to make them Squire again.
While we is at it the reason you got a black or sometimes dark purple space
in you first captures is because windows displays the Video in overlay mode
laid on top of a space in the player. This save cpu cycles as only the vid
needs to be redrawn for each frame rather then the whole screen.

So what size is you image in Pixels

The PowerDVD window is 720x400, but then when I screen capture it and paste it
into PSP, the new image is 720x480. So the vertical size has increased, which
explains why it looks thinner horizontally. So how can I fix this?

Resize with maintain aspect ratio un checked

But, Trev, that will severely distort it! But then again, no one will
notice it in PSP.

Yes, but I meant, is there any way to make it so that when I paste it into
PSP, the new image is automatically 720x400 instead of 720x480?

720 x 480 is correct for NTSC DVD On your side of the pond. The 720x400 is
squeezed to produce a wide look but with some edge cliping

The short answer is no, and Trev has given you the reasons in his
posts. Your screen capture is from a program that has a different
aspect ratio, so you'll just have to resize to the new one you'll
need. PSP doesn't know what aspect ratio you want, so you have to
tell it.

Thanks for the help, guys.

I just noticed in PowerDVD, there is a Captured Aspect Ratio option. It was
set to "Original video source size" by default, but I changed it to
"Current video window size" and now it looks fine when I paste screen captures
into PSP.

Good stuff! You never know what you'll find when you start poking
through the options of a program.
