Using PSP9.
I have a b&w photo of a person wearing several strings of beads on his
neck.
I would like to color just the beads. Each string a different color.
The problem, of course is to select the beads. I played with the magic
wand but it didn't work very well.
How would you go about it? Any ideas?

It isn't really an "of course" at all. You'd be better off
doing this without selections at all. Try this instead:

1. Open your black and white image.
2. If this option is not greyed out, do Image > Increase Color
Depth > 16 Million Colors.
3. Do Layers > New Raster Layer.
4. In the Layer Palette set the blend mode of the top layer
(the one you just created) to Color (Legacy) or Color.
5. Pick a bead color, select the Paintbrush tool and paint
on the color of the beads on this upper layer. The Color
Blend mode may give you more bright colors than the Legacy
mode.

The Magic Wand worked well but, even though beads are beads,
their brightness was not the same everywhere in the beads.
In other words, your image is not uniform over the beads so
a method of selection based on uniformity won't work.
