PS version 7.04 compared to 9.0
|
|
|
| Is there any worthwhile reason to switch from 7.04 to 9.0. Is it a
free upgrade? Is there a "whats new" file to read somewhere? I looked
at the new features on Jasc's web page but nothing jumped out at me.
I basically use PaintShop to edit and improve my photos. The only
thing that interested me was the "Fill Flash Filter corrects the
underexposure of shadows. The Backlighting Filter compensates for
overexposed areas." but if it is the same as what is in Photo album 5
then I am not interested as I find it poor. Creating a duplicate layer
and using screen seems to work better for me.

Sounds like you don't need it. $50 for a registered upgrade. 8 has
some photo tool you might like tho.

Yes.

No, of course not, no more than a new model Ford is a free
upgrade for an old one going back two model versions.

It's not the same as Photo Album. You missed the Digital Camera
Noise Removal filter and the Chromatic Aberration filters, both
of which are very useful to people fixing photos. You missed
the Background Eraser (in PSP 8), which makes cutting objects
from photos or changing backgrounds easy. You missed the warp
tools (in PSP 8), which can change a frown into a smile. You
missed the Straighten and Perspective tools (in PSP 8), which
respectively straighten a crooked photo and correct perspective
distortion. You missed the lens correction filters (in PSP 8),
which correct pincushion, barrel and fisheye distortion. PSP 9
has luminance-only sharpening, which lets you sharpen without
unnecessarily increasing noise. PSP 9 has an improved edge
finding filter, which allows you to make better edge masks
for sharpening your images. PSP 8 has a Soft Focus filter that
allows you to replicate soft focus camera filters used in
portraiture after the fact. All of these are tools for
photographers. There's a whole bunch of new effects and paint
tools but you probably don't care about those.

If you require more software crashes, yes.
You'll need at super computer to run PSP-9.

Only thing that will jump out at you is the price. PSP-8 was $108 at
Best Buys and it didn't even include a manual!!!!!

new manuals!!!!
What is up with NOT including it in the box
for $108.
Geez! I'm in Canada... I should check out how
much it's available at, if at all, at Best Buy
and Future Shop.
That's pretty sad...

I don't know what Mr. Urchin is talking about, but when I bought PSP 5, 7,
and 8, they all came with manuals in the box. I didn't buy them at Best
Buy, but the boxed price there was always around $80.

So why do we get charged 49.95 pounds for it here in the UK?? (from
Jasc Uk partner Digital Workshop.) Why do so many US software
producers think that you do currency conversion by changing the dollar
sign to a pound sign... it just screams rip off.
At today's exchange rate of 1 British Pound = 1.80860 US Dollar that
means we are getting charged $90.34 for the upgrade here in the UK!!!
Can I buy my update direct from the states?

I think you'll find that the local distributor (i.e., Digital Workshop)
sets the UK pricing. Among other factors, importing manuals etc. costs
them...

Nope - actually just got an email from Jasc UK themeselves - they
specified the same price 49.95 GBP. I've had PSP since v5 and have
bought all the upgrades since (I'll have to work out how much money
that is in total)... but this one and it's price has really made me
stop and think, it's not an automatic decision any more. At 30 GBP it
probably would have been, but fifty quid??? (and I bet there is P&P to
add to that).
And I'd like to hear what Kris has to say about the one dollar = one
pound currency conversion.
BTW Does v9 actually start up any faster than v8?

9 is no big upgrade, unless you paint, but anyway, one could wait a
few months and ck out ebay, for a better price, as they do have some
remarkable buys.

My personal opinion is that my dollars don't buy enough
pounds. For many years when I have visited London - my
place of birth - I have used a one dollar equals one pound
conversion to estimate how much something will cost me in
England. Lately, with a weaker dollar, this hasn't been
quite enough and things are even more expensive for me.
You might want to look into the Economist's Big Mac Index
to see why that might be.

I don't believe there is a "Jasc UK". I received an email about PSP9
from the UK distributors, Digital Workshop (www.digitalworkshop.com)
Anyone interested in paying less than 49.95 GBP for the PSP9 upgrade
should read on...
Digital Workshop have recently launched the Digital Photo Club. Here's
some information which I received from them:
"(We are)...offering a special extended program of support which enables
you to ring up for all manner of support queries not just about Paint
Shop Pro but also on how to get a particular effect or how to do a
particular task. Â_We’ll even help with printers, and cameras and
scanners if we can!
"The service will be provided as part of a subscription to Digital
PhotoClub UK which we are offering to you at just £12 per annum –
half the launch price.Â_ In addition to the extended support services
we’re offering:
Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_ "Discounts on software and consumables
Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_ "Free introductory pack with paper samples and
tutorial CD Rom
Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_ "Biannual CD Rom with hints, tips and free
creativity software and demos of the latest releases.
Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_Â_ "Online user forum to share ideas and information
with fellow users, with special sections for beginners and
professionals."
People who call to order the PSP9 upgrade are being offered the chance
to join _and_ get the PSP9 upgrade for the reduced price of 39.95 GBP.
They don't have a website yet. If anyone in the UK is interested in
finding our more they can phone Gael Harris at Digital Workshop on 0870
120 2186.
And no, I am not associated with DW. I just believe that details of the
Photo Club are worth sharing.
