Promote to layer if you have not already done so then remove the white with
a/ the background eraser.
B/ by selecting with the wand with contiguous checked

And to alter the colour while preserving lightness and texture try the
change to target brush You may whish to make a selection of the area first
depending on how steady you painting mouse is
