I am attempting to use the despeckle tool but, when I attempt to do so, I
receive the above error.

Operating system: - XP Pro SP2

Basic system specs: - FX-55, 2GB RAM, 2x75GB HDs, 1x300GB, 9800XT.

I have not installed the patch because it is not yet available for my
language version.

I have installed and reinstalled but the problem persists.

I should add that the error does not cause the application to terminate, but
okaying the error does not cause the despeckle tool to open either.

In fact, it happens whatever correction tools I attempt to use - including
one step photo fix.

Any ideas?

Wow! Such a widespread problem not cured by re-installing suggests
that some part of Windows that PSP is calling has become trashed.
The coming patch to PSP surely will not correct it.

You might get some clues from the Windows Event Viewer, probably
found at Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.
Check it immediately after the error happens.

Did PSP once run OK? If so, what software changes have happened
since?

A Trojan, spyware, or similar bad actor has to be suspected. Try
scanning with both Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are
free, and between them they are quite thorough.

I did. There's no entry.

Yes.

If so, what software changes have happened since?

None whatsoever

I have both AdAware Pro and Spybot detect nothing. AVG also reports a clean
system. The weekly scheduled defrag ran last night.

Any other ideas?

You are doing everything right, so far. Whatever changed, it is
probably not the software, so I'd start looking at hardware. Test
with graphics acceleration set all the way down. Then dig out the
hardware diagnostics that came with the computer and run them all,
with special attention to the memory tests. They take a long time to
run.

Try exercising other programs, particularly those that deal with
graphics. The pattern of what works and what does not might help
isolate the cause.

I will guess from your high-end equipment that you are comfortable
inside the case. Reseating all the cards, memory chips, and
connectors could help. Make sure all the fans are running and free
of gunk, as heat can be a problem.

Let us hope this works. I am beginning to run out of ideas!

Is that the whole error? Does it reference a .dll?

Did your event log show anything around the same time as the error?

Try running dxdiag from Start-->Run. Run all the tests.
