Author Quality of third-party image viewers

Unless I'm missing something, there's no way to create a simple
manually driven slide show for digital pictures in Paintshop Pro (or
Photoshop).

I've tried several pieces of freeware image viewing software. I like
XnView and have just discovered Visere, which has a much neater
interface. But neither of these pieces of software displays images as
well as Paintshop Pro. Most photos will need to be shrunk to fit the
screen, and pictures in the freeware tools exhibit distinct jagginess
compared to the smooth results in PaintShop Pro.

I obviously can't complain, these are free tools after all, but it
makes me wonder what it is that Paintshop Pro does that these other
tools can't. It also makes me wonder if there's a freeware image
viewing tool out that produces the same quality results as Paintshop
Pro.

Download Paint Shop Photo Album for a 30 day trial form www.jasc.com.
Forone thing, it works seamlessly with PSP for photo edting. It creates
slide show in various formats.

I thought of that, but Paint Shop Photo Album seems to come with a
load of features that I don't want: photo fixing, creating keepsakes,
organising, uploading... when all I want is a neat viewer.

www.irfanview.com
to view, make thumbnails and much more. But you can use it in fullscreen mode and just view, very fast.

Thanks for the recommendation. To start with, I thought that IrfanView
suffered from the same image quality problem that XnView and Visere
suffer from when viewing downsampled images. Then I found the item in
the IrfanView options dialog to provide slower-but-better resampling.
This provides the image quality that I was looking for.

Any imaging system is only as good as its weakest component, and it
irritated me that when viewing/displaying my photos, the weakest
component was the viewer.

I've been in contact with the people at DMMD about Visere, and they
say that other people have commented on the image quality issue and
that they are considering offering a more sophisticated resampling
algorithm in Visere. I'm looking forward this, as I really like the
look-and-feel of Visere. In the meantime, I think I'll be using
IrfanView.

Contrary to what I said before, I've just found that XnView does have
a high-quality resampling option. Unfortunately, it doesn't work with
slideshows, so I'm still sticking with IrfanView (for now).

It amazing what (1) one programmer can author compared to the, how many
was it, Kris, 100?, programers at what used to be known as Jasc
Software, Inc..

As the saying goes, haste makes waste.
