Adobe Premier Video Editing - a little help needed

using Premiere Pro 6.5, and sometimes when I drag a clip onto the timeline,
on the top left had corner there is a little triangle.......I am not sure
what that means, but when I try and put a "cross disolve " transition onto
the two clips in the middle, I am unable. I have to put the transition on
the leading edge of the clip in question, and the whole transition then
"lives" on the clip, not between the two as desired........
any ideas as to what that little triangle means? and why I lose the ability
to properly cross disolve ?
