Author Is there a smooth function?

been wondering if there is a way to do this.

basically i want to make an object that has jagged edges or straight
sides, to be smooth. so basically illustrator will fill in points or
automatically apply some bezier curves so that from point to point you
have a nice smooth curve.

any have a workaround for this?

thx in advance

I'm working in old Illy 9 so don't know about new features. Depending on
your object you can try [menu] Object>Path>Simplify. If that doesn't do what
you want and you want to change corner points to smooth points you could try
Effect>Distort & Transform>Zig-Zag with settings at 0, 0, Smooth ticked,
then Object>Expand and touch-up as you please.

There's the smooth tool, but that's very hands-on, not automatic.

maybe try the Effects, Round Corners command. It's not only for
rectangles/squares : |

Are you saying that you have a raster image with lines that have
jagged edges

or you have a vector line with jagged edges

thank you for all the suggestions. still not the one im looking for
though.
all the options just adds points which make the vector object warbbly.
perhaps in Illy 13.
cheers

I think much of this is the way Illy handles corners, or specifically,
round corners. Instead of one symmetrical anchor it uses two sort of
counter balanced anchors. I never really cared for that approach.

Major Feature Wish:
Be able to select a range of anchors and automatically (button click)
convert between corner, smooth or symmetrical anchors (as was possible
in Freehand for many years, and Quark, for that matter).

What you're looking for is supported by third party plug-ins
(particularly the Curvius set of filters, among others). However, the
poor-man's method has been hinted at in previous replies. It's not
perfect, but will often be sufficient for your described needs. MInd,
this if for smoothing "free form" paths, and not radiusing an object's
corners.

In Illustrator 10 and up, after selecting: Filter->Distort->Zig Zag,
settings: Size-0, Ridges per section-0, Points-smooth. Then
Objects->Path->Simplify, settings variable to taste while using preview.

The above is not perfect but will often be in the "good enough" range of
results or at least bring things to the point where only minimal
tweaking is required. It beats (re) doing everything by hand.
