Adobe Illustrator - Drop Shadow question

Drop Shadow question

Please look at this tutorial:

So making a clipping path in PS, placing it in Illy. For the
life of me I can not get the Drop Shadow to work on the cup.
Not from Filters, not from Effects. Anyone an idea?

Hi steggy,

I was able to do it, but it's wierd. I had left the cup in RGB, so I worked
in Illustrator 9 in RGB. I had to use the Drop Shadow filter as the Effect
wouldn't do anything. When I used the filter it creates another path, but
the path is empy and I had toapply color. It was also cutting into the
original cup image so I had to rearrange the paths and layers.

I found a way I likd better by selecting the path of the cup and pasting
it in a new layer behind it, filling, transparency/multiply and blur.

Hi Inez

I did his last night together with Steg, but we still saw a black background
in the ear of the cup. Maybe he got it last night, but it was to late for me
to to try ....
What do i have to do to make the ear transparant at well?

If i now try to make a Drop Shadow i only see it appearing around the cup
and see the ear remaining black. What could be the problem?

I kept getting that too, but you have to rearrange things in the layers
pallette. Ungroup your cup from the shadow, create an new layer, drag it
below the cup layer and then drag your shadow group into it.

The one I did by the tutorial is at the bottom here:
http://imagessence.com/other/cup.html and you can see to the left in
the Layers pallette how I arrange them for it to work.

I don't know why the back drop shadow path had cut into the cup path, but
this is what fixed it for me.

I read in a Dutch NG (nl.comp.grafisch) that saving the file in PS as EPS
was the key to get it right. However i didn't try it yet, but will try both
of them.

File > Place > EPS
Choose white arrow, then Select > Object > Clipping Mask
(Path selected now) Copy and Paste in Front
New Layer and dragging the selection in it. Fill.
Then Drop Shadow

Drag this new layer behind the illustration ...

I hope i translated it well .....

As said, i will try both of the hints and will let you know if it became
succesfull.

That's basically what I did with the top version, except I just placed the
PS, and I didn't apply drop shadow that time, I just filled, applied
transparency/multiply and blurred.

I've imported plenty of clipped PS EPS files into Quark though and then
simply applied drop shadow. Works fine. I'm new to Illy though, so it's fun
to learn different ways of doing things.

Dear Steg,

Beginners in our production team face same problem. While quality inspection, we had to instruct them to remove background and make it transparent.

When you remove the background just by deleting. You actually get the background with color defined by your PS as background color.

With transparent backgrounds, the shadow works quite fine. However, in colored backgrounds, the shadow still works. But, not around the extracted image, but around the total image. Use the move tool to move the layer or background and you will find the fact.
