| I created a rectangle with a fill color. Then I put text over it. I want to
"cut out" the text out of the rectangle. When I choose on fill color for
the font, it just shows the rectangle below. How do I "cut out" the font
text?

Convert your text to outlines (Type -> Create Outlines), select the
outlined text & the rectangle, then go to Pathfinder and "Subtract from
shape area" - should be the second little icon from left on the top.

You might try Pathfinders: > Divide
(the first one)
Create the rectangle
Create the text object and palce over the rectangle
Select text and convert to outlines
Select all objects then select Pathfinders: > Divide
The rectangle should be missing the outlines of the text. If the text
has characters like e, etc... you will have to tweek by moving the
extra outlines.

Place your type over the rectangle. Select both and click the Subtract Shape button in the Pathfinder Palette and your done!<B>Leave the effect 'live' and you can move the type and rectangle independently by targeting the individual elements in the Layers Palette. Click Expand in the same palette to reduce the artwork to a simple compound object. Best of luck! |
