blending options for layers

| In Adobe Photoshop, one can apply varrious blending options to a
particular layer to make that layer sorta combine with the other layer
in a particular way. Can this be done in Illustrator as well, or am I
going to have to create one layer in Illustrator and copy it over to
Photoshop when I'm ready?

Generally, in Illy you apply Transparency blending to an object or group. It
basically just gives you more options if you have several objects on a
single layer. Since one object can be above or below another on the same
layer you can apply transparency blending independent of layers. If you want
to though, you can select everything on a layer by selecting the layer in
the layer palette and set the transparency for all those object to interact
with object in a lower layer. Your choice.
