Author Can't resize rectangles

I'm sure I've been able to do this previously, but it doesn't work now.
Treat me as a newbie, as I've less than three months experience in
Illustrator!

In Illustrator, I open any file (or create a new one).

Draw a filled rectangle on the page.

The scale, shear etc tools work fine on the rectangle, but I want to just
resize it by dragging.

To do this, I would select the 'Selection Tool(V)', then click and drag the
rectangle to the size I want.

This doesn't work - it just moves the rectangle.

Using the 'Direct Select Tool (A)', I can grab a handle and pull it to any
position - but this only moves the handle I've selected, and distorts the
rectangle.

Any ideas what's going wrong?

Regards,

Pete.

there should "dots" marking the border of the rectangle, which when
clicked and dragged should resize your object. Ususally eight of them,
the ones in the corners are able to resize the object proportionally.
If, when pressin "V" those markers does not appear, try searching the
prefrences to see if that function has been turned off. I=B4m no quiet
sure of this but it=B4s worth checking out.

It sounds like you've somehow set the bounding box to hidden.

In the View menu: Show/Hide Bounding Box.

Keyboard command to toggle: Apple- Shift-CMD-B, Windows- Shift-CTRL-B.
