Author CMYK file

Hello everyone

I'm pretty new to Illustrator, and I'm having an odd problem. I'm using
an older version (Version 9)

I have a file from a CD printing company that just has template lines
on it. I've added via "place" a TIFF file that is CMYK. I set the color
mode of the document to CMYK, and verify it's using the correct CMYK
color profile. I then save the file as a .ai file

Now when I open the file back up, it displays the file as RGB and not
CMYK - and it asks me to assign an RGB profile. What am I missing here?
Why is it no longer in CMYK mode?

Thanks in advance
Mike

I don't know the reason for this but have had it happened to me a couple of
times. I'd consider the old file corrupt as actual color values have
probably changed. Quit. Restart your computer. Make a new document set to
CMYK mode. Place the the printing company's template as "Link" and
"Template". Then place your CMYK TIFF (uncheck Link and Template).

Look in Document Info (uncheck Selection Only) adn look at Linked images and
Embedded images to check how color space is being read.

Look at your Color palette to make sure it's CMYK.

Look at your Swatches palette to make sure the swatches show the CMYK icon
on the right. In the flyout menu Select Unused Colors and delete them. See
if any spot colors remain.

Save. Maybe quit and restart Illustrator, then reopen the file. See if it's
OK. If it isn't, my best guess would be to quit, delete Illustrator
preferences, restart, and start over again as above.

I still use Illy 9.0.2 on Mc OS 9.2.2.

Hey, sweetie! Glad to hear your move is done and now you can get settled in
and make your house a home. Maybe you could upload pics someday?

Don't fret over it, steg. I don't know how well things are going to work on
this ol 350MHz machine anyway;)

Inez,

How do you delete illustrator preferences?

I tried something new this morning - I created a brand new file - set
the color mode to CMYK. Did absolutely nothing else to the file -
didn't add an image or test or anything. Saved the file. Opened it back
up, and it again says it's RGB

Thoughts?

Mike

When using a Mac in OS 9: find the Preference folders in the System
folder and trash the Adobe Illustrator Prefs.

For OS X it is in the Library folder.

Windows? I would not know;)

Gave this a shot - it didn't seem to work - really has me baffled,
especially since it happens on new files as well

I wonder if somehow your Startup_CMYK document got corrupted?... But that
doesnt seem right if it only happens on save and reopen. But, are you saying
that when you open a NEW CMYK document it changes to RGB also? I'm assuming
your swatches, color palette and window title all reflect this change to
RGB, correct? I know when this was happening to me on Save I could actually
see the swatches change from CMYK to RGB during the saving process.

Have you been getting that damn Synchronize dialog box? I hate that thing
and in fooling around trying to figure out your problem I've somehow gotten
the thing popping up again. ARGH! LOL

I'm actually suspecting this might be a system problem. Have you tried the
old Rebuild Desktop and zapping PRAM? What kind of scratch disk space do you
have and how much ram?

i think ur Illustrator colour settings are set to a RGB profile. Check
that in the Edit menu.
