Author outline and preview image

I'm learning Illustrator so bear with me please...

In this image I'm showing a font I made into outline format because the
program told me I had to do that in order to be able to apply certain
effects...
Why is the outline so different from the image I'm actually seeing? Is
there a way to get the outline to look like the image it's making? Or do I
have a setting done incorrectly causing it to look like this?

Thanks,
Babs

Your outline stays the way you originally typed it. The
effects are only seen in the result, I would call that a
live effect. In that way you can always change your original
and the effect is adapted.

Hit Object>>Expand Appearance (Illustrator 10) and the
object after the effect will have the selection points you
are looking for.

Cool... Guess I have to get used to this...
You'd think that many of the tools Adobe products use would be in the same
spots (for example, gradient and paint bucket are different in Photoshop
than for Illustrator... I keep going for the paintbrush tool and get the
type tool...)

Thanks Steg... I've bought a book on this, it's going to be harder to
become proficient with this program than I thought... But, at least it's
fun...

Is there a binary group so that I might be able to see what people are doing
with this program? Do people share their .ai files?

Thanks again,
Babs

I forgot to add by the way that I thougt your JPG looked great!!:))
I like it.

For your question......I hope someone is aware of such a
group, sounds fun to me also. I only know text groups like
this one, and do not forget the adobe forums group. Like
here lots of expertise there, but no binaries.
Illustrator is (for me) really a fun piece of software, it
is my favorite. After working with all the Adobe software
for years and years it still is. I am excited to get to know
CS2 already:)

Remember Babs (funny name, a Dutch friend of mine is called
Babs, very rare:)), Photoshop and Illustrator are totally
different >>> vector against raster. Gradient in Illustrator
is vector, in Photoshop it is raster. Of course they might
try to give the tools the same spot LOL
