Re: another one for you... combining paths?
|

|
| I'm excited to actually be able to answer a queston about Illustrator
instead of just asking them! <g>
I just (in my quest to convert to AI-ism from Corel-ism) found this
myself:
1) Select both paths
2) Find the "Pathfinder" pallette
3) The top left button in the Pathfinder pallette is "Add to shape
area." Click that.
Ta da.
A little clunkier than Corel, but it's there.

| Hmmm... I must be doing something wrong - this did nothing.
I have two complex paths, overlapping... seems like they should easily
be merge-able, but I can't get them to stick together!
Aaargh.
| |
| Michael 23 2005-06-14, 11:16 pm |
| Doh!
They still remain as separate paths, but I see now that I am rotating
them... it is just that as soon as I release the corner handle after
rotating, the guide area (bounding box??) snaps back to 90 degree
angles.
I really expected AI to be a lot more like Photoshop... but I am seeing
more and more how wrong I was!
| |
|
| Make sure you click the Expand button on the pallette after you have
combined the paths. Sorry.. forgot about that. That might help you.

AI is nothing like Photoshop. It's vector and you have to think different to
work in it.
Easiest way to do what you want is to simply group the shapes -- select>ctl+G
You can then rotate and move them as one but they stay separate shapes.
To ungroup, ctl+alt+G.
You can move parts in and out of the group in the layers palette. Click on
the arrow in front of the layer to see the sublayers and groups.
Layers palette and Appearance palette are very important in Illustrator.
The book "Illustrator for Dummies" is a very good introduction to Illustrator
and vectors.

| AHA! Thanks Evan - that did it...
I would not have guessed that this is what the "expand" button does...
guess that means it "expands" the path to the outer selection of the
parts combined?
Whatever, it works. Thanks again.
If anybody is interested, here is the thing I have been playing with

I like three the best. Try moving the bird down to the space between the two
P's. Try making the bird a little smaller and have the top wing run parallel
to and a bit away from the bottom curve of the base of the top p.

Thanks for the detailed feedback... I will see what the client says,
and try your suggestions.
It is a weird design - the text may even end up as optional - the main
thing we are shooting for is the shape of the bird... not so much a
logo as a 'shape' - to be cut from sheet copper and mounted on the
front wall of the development.
I am not used to working in Illustrator at all - primarily a photoshop
user - but I need a vector image for this so it can be scaled huge. I
think this was a bad 'first' illustrator project!
and - Hey Lon - are any of your 1000 other faces nicer than the one you
are showing me? I am getting paid, as a side-shoot from another related
project, but by no means do I claim to be an expert. Any 'constructive'
criticism is very welcome!

You really need to take some design lessons. I am not going to try and
teach you how to design, you really should spend the time and money to take
some night classes. Or at least pick up a book at a book store on logos.
You really are not doing your client a service by doing what you are doing.

| Hi Lon...
not sure if you are trying to be harsh, or just honest... but you know,
I am not offended at all. In fact, you are right - looking at it again,
this really stinks. (You should see the photo of the bird that they
gave me to start from - yech.)
I am much more comfortable in Photoshop... and realizing I am probably
going about this all wrong. Instead of trying to reproduce the shape in
AI, there is no reason I cannot do it in PS and then trace my final...
right?
In fact... isn't there even some sort of auto-trace feature in AI?
anyway - thanks for 'keeping it real'... I have no intention of going
to school, but I do learn a lot from others and will probably order
some logo design books just for ideas.
I need to start over with this and try to get a real idea from the
client of what it is they want... at this point I am pretty sure they
don't know, either.

If you want to combine the bird and the "P", maybe try doing it with the
bird's tail instead of the wing, as though the P were the path of flight.

No, he's just trying to be a troll. He's really Mikey, the graphics
groups troll and he says the same things over and over again to
everyone. Just boring really. :)

AI is nothing like Photoshop AI deals with vectors. Photoshop deals
with raster.

That is because you have learned your lessons, there are other goofballs
that have not.
Now go back to being "nice" and move on.

| thanks for the encouragement... but he was right, that stinks.
I was looking at things all wrong... I will do what I want in
Photoshop, where I can zip around pretty quick, and then trace the
final into AI for smooth curves.
Really wierd working with a single black shape like this, too!
[color=darkred]
bird's tail instead of the wing, as though the P were the path of
flight.
I may just try this exact thing... was also trying to find a falcon
shape that would work as the cut-out part of the P.
It would help if the client could nail down what the heck it is that
THEY want... that keeps changing, too.
Thanks again for the input. Hope you all dont mind if I stick around
and keep posting questions... I am sure to have more as I get into
using Illustrator more often.
