Dunno what is happening, but if the text is typed along a
circular path I never have that problem. Sounds maybe like a
text box?? No clue why someone would do that nor wether you
*can* do that on circular text. The little x does sound what
you are assuming though.......

To start over, delete the text, copy the circle the text
follows (or make it new at exactly the right measurements
and position), use the Path Type Tool and retype the text on
the new circle (the appearance of the circle will be gone).
I am sure that will not have the x-effect you describe.

If no success, upload it or mail it to me as an AI or EPS. I
have Illy 10 (still). Would love to see this one.
