Author Area calculations

I am pretty sure Illustrator does not offer this. But
still.......a friend of mine asked if Illustrator could
calculate the area/surface measurements, like in square
inches/millimeters, of a randomn irregular shape.

I told him: No:)
He was busy trying stuff in Excel, but that did not help. He
was thinking of developing a method using a grid with small
squares to calculate the area properties, but that appeared
to be not very helpful. Maybe someone has an idea?

A tempting project. I've thought about doing a plugin for this at
various times in the past, having done one for path lengths:

Have your friend contact me directly if interested in the idea.

Thanks for the suggestion Toby, I am sure he will be
interested. He is an Excel expert and thought of using that
expertise together with Illustrator
possibilities........also he is mathematical strong and has
time on his hands;) One of his (still immature) ideas is
using a colored grid (of small squares) under the object and
try to calculate the amount of color within the path, in the
squares that are not completely covered by that path. If you
get what I mean. Problem is Excel does not recognize color
tones. I am sure there are more possibilities.

You will recognize him on his Dutch mail address (.nl), his
name is Theo.

Thanks again.

He might also be able to use my "pathtotext" plugin, which exports a
tab-delimited file of path coordinates:

<spot the geek>

Excel is my favourite MS app. There's so much you can do with it, and
it's fun just playing with numbers..

One could do this: http://mathworld.wolfram.com/PolygonArea.html
or this: http://www.attewode.com/Calculus/Ar...rement/area.htm
or this: http://www.efg2.com/Lab/Library/Gra...PolygonArea.htm
