is there a way to continue a closed path?

| Okay I have been trying to figure this out forever. Lets say I have a
sqauare, a closed path but I want to add something to its edge with the pen
tool (i.e. a swurl edge). How do I go about 'continuing' a closed path? is
it even possible?
Thanks!

You could outline both of the paths and then merge both resulting shapes.
