Author Illustrator 8.0 need to avoid 'voids'

There's a mapping mystery perhaps you can help solve.

Until now I've primarily used Illustrator 8.0 to create b/w maps.
I've used a pattern brush effect to symbolize railroad tracks on the b/w
maps. However, when I place the tracks on a color background, a white void
appears whenever a curve is made in the tracks. Is there a way to eliminate the
white void in the curved areas?

Thanks,

George
