Author Cannot resize a text box. - Undo Load Place Cursor?

I am a bit perplexed and I am hoping someone might be able to help out here.

I am using Illustrator CS 11.00 and attempting to create a flyer. In my
previous attempts to create a text box and then resize it if it was too big
I had no problem. Now for some reason when I create a text box, enter all
my text and then try to resize by clicking on a specific side of the window,
I get a very strange action. It seems as if I am doing something without
even trying. The two undo messages I get are as follows:
- Undo Load Place Cursor.
- Undo Link Threaded Text and

What I am attempting to do is create a box, enter my text and then resize
the box sides to accommodate the placement of the box. I have tried the
"Free Transform Tool" but that changes the size of my text which I don't
wish to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers and Regards,
Wade

It sounds like you're accidentally hitting the "link text" doohickey in
the corner of the text area. Either resize from a different corner or
edge, or, if that is inconvenient, use the scale tool or the transform
palette.

To use the scale or free transform tool to transform just the text box
without changing the size of the text, use the object select tool (white
arrow with plus) to select just the text box and not the contents.
