Newbie's silly question

| Hi,
I'm using CS and I have created a business card (91 mm x 50 mm) and saved as
an .ai file, which I want to print out 10 to an A4 sheet. The card has a
white background
To line the cards up on the page, I will need to show a grid as in Photoshop
I believe. My intention is to copy and paste 10 instances of the .ai file on
to a new document A4 in size and then to move them into position
individually. I have done this successfully in Photoshop.
How can I create a coloured background layer to help with the cutting up of
the cards? Or is there a much simpler way of doing the cards 10 to an A4
sheet?
Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Bill.

Man this is the 40th time............ah well....
Select the business card, go to Effect>>Distort & Transform>>Transform>>Move.
Not sure what you mean with the coloured background
layer.......yes it is very simple and.........you do not
need to "move them into position individually".

| Well Steggy - first of all - Sorry you have been bothered!!! There was me
thinking that the newsgroup was intended to help others.
Secondly - you obviously did not grasp what it was I was asking.
I want a different colour of background so that when I guillotine the page,
I have guidelines for cutting - what you have suggested comes nowhere close
to answering my questions, now back to bed and don't be so grumpy in future!

| Well.........I do not think I am known for being grumpy on
this group LOL
Please, I am doing my utmost (see: I am posting at the top
like you do).........what the hell do you mean by this:
"I want a different colour of background so that when I
guillotine the page, I have guidelines for cutting"
I read it many times but still.......I cannot figure it out.

PS I am sorry and I mean it, I am not the grumpy kind of
guy. Just tired maybe, but I do enjoy this group and I am
serious about it.

| OK Steggy,
Let's start again - I believe that you did not intend to come across as
rude - I mean that.
I want - and I have actually just done it in Photoshop by pasting the .ai
file into PS on a new A4 document and creating a new layer on the document
with a darker colour to show me the edges of the white business card. I have
then pasted another 9 instances of the .ai file and have arranged them in
such a way as to make the cutting of the cards more straightforward as the
"Cards" are all perfectly in line, giving me 10 cards per A4 page - almost
as if I had inserted a table with 10 equal cells and pasted a copy of the
file in each cell.
This is Fine - I can use this, but I was hoping to learn how to do the same
thing in Illustrator (I am sure it can be done) - that's it in a nutshell.
One last thing - whether or not you understood my original post, please
remember that not everyone has seen all of the group postings perhaps that
you have.
Anyway, thanks for keeping this on a civilised level.
Regards,
Bill

| The "Darker Layer" by the way was used as a background layer - simply to aid
the aligning of the "Cards" on the A4 document and for ease of cutting.

| In other words, I do not know how to create a new background layer in
Illustrator which has a colour other than white.

You make a new layer in the layer palette then draw as big a box as you want
and apply a color to it. Drag that layer below your card layer.
Steggy's first reply was telling you a much simpler way to layout all the
cards instead of copy/paste.
If you're intent is to lay them out with a gutter between them all you would
group your first card and place it at upper left.
Under Effect menu/Distort & Transform, select Tranform.
Under Move/Horizontal type in (something like) 95mm, 1 copies, click OK.
The select Transform again and under Move/Vertical type in -55mm, 4 copies,
click OK. (Oh, ignore any warning that may popup since you do want to
Tranform again.)
At this point it all acts like one piece. You can move them, center them to
page or whatever, by selecting the original card. This is especially cool
becuase if you decide to change something all you have to do is edit the
original and all the others will be changed.
So, our Steggy was trying to help. Just a communication hiccup;)

Again sorry Bill, was not intended that way. Sometimes I
post like sitting next to you having a pint. I should be
more careful:)) Typed in letters do lack the effect of
looking each other in the eye.
And Inez is a true lady by the way. :D

But it was, at least, the 40th time. The same questions do get "old".
