Author Getting Illustrator to Start

Not sure just where to start, but I loaded Illustrator CS on my Win XP Pro
machine and it starts, but hangs up on the splash screen when it gets to
"Initializing Plug In...Geometry.aip"

I've rebooted, run Norton WinDoc, uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, etc
and still the same. I moved all the start up files out of the start up
directory, went into msconfig and unchecked a bunch of startup files,
leaving some, rebooting, all to no avail. I even thought Ad-Aware or the
new MS Anti-Spyware might cause this problem and uninstalled them.

I now can't run acrobat reader 7. After install, it funs fine, and after
that it will load into task manager, but not on the screen.

I used the same Illustrator CD to install on my laptop and it works just
fine.

I'm about ten hours into this and am now in circles, backtracking over my
work a third time.

Any thoughts?

Dennis

Are you running Norton AV at the same time? Or any other Norton
Product. They causes lots of problems to a lot of people a lot of the
time.

I was/am running Norton System Works, but uninstalled it and had the same
Adobe failure to open after a reinstall without Norton.

A big clue is the install doesn't put in the aiprefs file in my docs &
settings. In my laptop it is there and I copies all the files over and
still no open, just a hang up.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,

Dennis

Are you running any other security software? Including a firewall? If
you are, first, make sure you're *not* online (Disconnect the cable
physically if you have to, and then try again.

Otherwise I can't think of anything which would intercept the install.
As it installed alright on the lap top, it's obviously not a problem
with the installer or the disk.

If I think of anything else I'll post it.
