| I want to crop this complex path but the crop functin doesn't work?
I think because the behind path is open. Is there a work around?
I want to really crop not to make a clipping mask!
Try with this example:

can you help me?
thanks rmartin

| You need to "create outlines" on the strokes...then weld them together.
Then you can trim off the areas you don't need.
If you leave as strokes and try to trim off the area outside of the border,
the paths will "auto-close" giving you results you don't want.

With the direct selection tool, select the entire clipping mask
In the pathfinder pallette (Window > Pathfinder), select the Divide
icon
Start deleting what you don't want using the direct selection tool

| Play around as much as you can with the pathfinder. this will be your
best friend for cropping once you understand the functions of each
button. and don't forget to hit "expand" afterwards to turn your
complex shape into a compound path.

There's a beautyful plug-in for Illustrator called Kimbo. Really
helpful tool when you need
to crop something complex. Otherwise you can use clipping mask.

Or you can hold down "Alt" ("Option" on the Mac?) while clicking one of
the Pathfinder tools to expand right away.
