using callouts(or blowup windows) in a pdf

| Hi all. I am on Illustrator 10 and win2k machine.
I am using a pdf(from AutoCad'05), and am trying to manipulate it in
Illustrator to make it look more "artsy" for a report. I want to make
callouts from selected areas on this map. I want to zoom in and
"blowup" certain points on the map to highlight hydraulic structures.
The reason I want to do this in Illustrator as opposed to Autocad is I
want to add leader lines to the callout boxes, that will blend in to
the box. Similar to a gradient. Autocad can't do that, I assume this
has been done before in Illustrator.
I know enough Illustrator to get by, but this might be an all-niter for
me. Any tips, sites, books, or ideas would be appreciated.
TIA,

I don't guess that I get what the problem is.
How about just selecting the area of interest, copy, paste to another
area, scale up to the desired size, place it within a closed path that
will be the callout shape?

| jbl,
How would you make the leader lines into a nice gradient/fade? I want
to make the callout boxes fade from the point to the box, it'll give
the boxes a more "nuanced" effect.
I have been trying to use the rectangle --> gradient tools, but I don't
know how to "pinch" one end of the rectangle to slim the effect.
