I don't know about answering your own questions in this group, but it
might be helpful to somebody else.
Create a rectangle ( as the back layer ) large enough to contain all
of the open paths, fill it with the desired color.
Paste a copy of the paths forming the boundry ( of the park ) as the
top layer.
Select the background rectangle, and the paths, select Pathfinder
pallet > Divide
I now have a filled polygon in the shape of the park and some leftover
from the original rectangle, surronding it, which I just delete.
