Author (direct) selecting without moving

I'm new to Illustrator, so excuse me for any ignorance. Using CS2.

I scanned a picture (that great Picasso picture of don Quichotte) and traced
it just for fun.
Trying to select and group the different objects in the illustration I made
the mistake to move a little with my Wacom pen when I wanted only to select
objects. A couple of times I noticed only some time later and needed
repeatedly to undo. Is there is way around this (no I didn't drink and
normally don't shake too much)? Can you tell the direct selection tool to do
just that: select?

Thanks

Gerard
