Is there an easier way of applying reverse rounded corners in illustrator
like example below?, in other vector software apps I can use negative value
but not in this case.

Draw a rectangle and one circle. Copy the circle 3 times and put them on
the corners. Select all the objects (the rectangle + four circles) and
press in the Pathfinder palette on the second icon "Subtract from shape
area".
