Author Saving layers into multiple files

What I want to do is the following: assume I have an Illustrator artwork
(Illustrator 10) with a number of layers. What I want to do is then
have the first
layer saved as file-1.eps, the second as file-2.eps etc.

Of course, one can accomplish this manually by selectively deleting
layers and saving the appropriate files but I would really like an
automated way. Ideally, the bounding box would be the same for all
saves (a way to accomplish this would be to include one background layer
with an invisible rectangle or other fixed element in each of the
saves), such that I can build up the compound image in exactly the same
way in an external code.
It seems a similar functionality exists for SVG files but I could not
find a way to do it with eps format files.

Does anyone know whether such a facility exists or how to go about
creating it (I have no knowledge of VB)

THanks
Frederik
