Pathfinder: Substract multiple shapes?

| Hello all,
I have one short question:
I want to cut off multiple shapes all by the same substracting shape,
e.g. a bunch of circles which I want to fit inside a rectangle.
There sure must be a short way to accomplish this.

| hi guido,
in ai10 make sure that your circles are all on top of the rectangle, choose
all objects and substract via pathfinder palette

| or place your rectangle over the circles and go Object, Clipping Mask , Make
..
this might be easier.

easier - but not the desired. try to fill your final object - it's all
filled...
