| In Illustrator CS is there any way to display the units of extrusion as mm
instead of points.

| In Preferences you can change the units for different things. That's in v10
anyway.

| I already have the preferences set for millimetres - I wondered if anyone
knew how to set the value under 3d extrude as there is no option for any
other units.

millimeters in other options ILLYYYYYY will automatically convert it?
I mean (I am not very clear today) if you have your Stroke Units for
instance set in points, and you type in 10 mm in the Stroke Weight box,
it will convert it to 28.35 points, which is the same.

This seems to work while you are inputting the numbers (though it
defaults to displaying the results in points).
I just thought it would be easier if you had to check a number of objects,
that it would be good to tell at a glance how many mm the depth was.

the 3D extrude. But that sounds like a different story.
How about using the Transform tool (just guessing here!). I mean is
there a way to direct select the original from the 3D "effect" and then
determine in the Transform tool what distance there is?
And yes I believe you when you type in mm it converts to points and that
is OK with "normal" procedures, because you can set them in the
Preferences. But if this is not to be set there.......I am afraid more
and more pixels and points are gonna be the norm, and I am still living
in the printing/paper world. Beside font sizes I never use those units.

It appears to be hardwired to be points. Not sure why, probably just an
oversight...
