Illustrator 10: the doc colour mode is RGB, I save as .ai format, when I
reload its always CMYK.

What do I need to change to avoid this?

Thanks

???
I think they know how to change colour mode, but it not staying in
that colour mode when it is saved and re-opened.

Do you use colour management?
I was having a few strange things happening to my saved files, but
after I trashed my prefs, all is OK.\I've never had or hear of your
problem though. I don't use the AI format that much.

He said reload not reopen, so he could mean running Illustrator again as
opposed to reopening the same file. So the title bar goes from
RGB/Preview to CMYK/Preview as opposed to just the colour pallet changing.

Colour management shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Trashing the preferences might work if the file keeps changing its
colour mode.

Ok, to clarify:

Illustrator 10:

1) I have a document in RGB mode, I save it.

2) I close the document.

3 ) I reload it.

4) It is now in CMYK mode.

It seems to do this with any document. I can't work out how to stop it ?

Ideas?

Thanks.

Close Illustrator then search for a file called AIPrefs, delete it then
restart Illustrator. Also make sure you are running the latest update,
it should be 10.0.3. You can find this in the top right of your splash
screen which can be seen either during start up or by going to Help >
About Illustrator.
