| hello, I hope someone can help me here.
I repeatedly get this error when trying to save my illustrator 10 files
after making changes. Can someone please advise, this is driving me crazy!
"Adobe PDF file format is having difficulties. Unable to open file for
writing. It may be locked or unavailable."
Thank you,
Cathy

Any illegal characters in the file's name? Backslashes and such? a list here:

I remember getting this error sometimes when my resources were very low and/or
out of memory, I think. Maybe a reboot would help?

Are you using windows per chance? This error does come up in windows
2000 and XP, it seems to be a windows problem. I get a similar message
now and again but there doesn't seem to be a way around it other than to
save as a different file name. After I have saved it as a different name
and closed it I can't delete the original file from windows explorer either.
Also check your files are not read only, if you have copied the files
from a cd-rom they can stay as read only files once they have been
copied on to the hard drive.
You can follow Gems suggestions regarding the file and path names this
will minimise the problem but not remove it completely. I have had files
that are okay one minute but won't save a minute later.
