Adobe Illustrator - outer glow and clipping mask

hi all

I'm having a little trouble trying to get something to work
in Illustrator. Since I'm fairly new at all this, it might be
something obvious for most of you. Here's the problem:

What I'm trying to achieve is the look of the second logo in this image,
and what I got so far is the first logo. So far, I've been using a
clipping mask to hide the part of the red ring behind the blue box. But
when I apply the outer glow effect on the red ring, the glow of the
hidden bit of the ring is still visible, which makes for a bit of a
strange effect (as you might be able to see on the second logo in the
image). Can anyone in here tell me how I can do this in illustrator? Or
is there a better way to do what I want to achieve? Thanks in advance!

Firstly add the glow and then you could either mask it or just try and
delete that area instead. You may want to make the masked area bigger
than the outer glow coverage.

When I tried to make the masked area bigger, it overlapped with the glow
of the lower part of the ring. That's why I decided to make the glow a
little smaller, which solved my problem. Thanks!

What you want to do is apply the glow first and then apply the clipping
mask. This should clip the glow the way you want.

Or, after applying the clipping mask, open up the group in the layers
palette and target the path itself by clicking in the little circle on
its layer. Then apply the glow. This will apply the glow to the path
and not to the whole clipping group. Illustrator has no way to know
whether you want to apply the effect to the object before or after it
has been clipped; the default is after, but this allows you to do it
before.
