Author HELP PAUL!

Paul,

I got this error message yesterday right in the midst of a critical deadline project and could not open Illustrator. Called Adobe
and got a professionally trained salesman that would not send me anywhere unless I spent some money for a technical call.

Have you seen this error?

/////////////////////////////////////////

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program:...trator CS\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe

This application has request the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the

application's support team for more information.

/////////////////////////////////////////////

Thanks Paul for any help ASAP. I use Illy daily for my jobs and it will be quite costly (man hours) to have to revert my art back
to 9.02 for any interim period.

BTW...I have a Dell 1.7mhz, gig dram, XP Home.

I completely defragged last night. Uninstalled this morning and re-installed to no avail.

Thanks!

-Robert

I can crash a Mac just as easily as a PC. Done it often enough.

I have not seen that error, but I think it's just a fancy way of saying
that the program crashed unexpectedly. The path specified is the
Illustrator executable (why it was decided that the executable should
now be considered a "support file" I have no idea).

I'm not much of a Windows expert, so I don't know whether programs
usually save some kind of crash log like they do on the Mac. If someone
else knows, and you can post the contents of the log, I might be able to
help, but without it there's not much I can do.

However, I believe that you should be able to get complimentary support
in this case. From http://www.adobe.com/support/cfcomp.html :

"As a registered owner of the current version of an Adobe product, you
are eligible to receive person-to-person support on issues related to
installation and product defects, including crashes and errors caused by
the Adobe software. There is no charge for this service; you only pay
for the cost of the call.

"So that we can maintain a high level of person-to-person support, you
will need to provide credit card information up front in the event that
your support request isn't covered under complimentary support. The
technical support representative will determine if your support issue is
complimentary or billable."

If the support person balks, ask to speak to his or her manager.

Thanks Paul...as always your guidance was good...I did in fact speak with a professional tech
support person....we tried various things and determined I am mostly *screwed*. My words, not his.
Ultimately this weekend I will probably have to wipe my HD clean and re-install Windows and build
from scratch. Stuff happens. At least it was not a virus that ate my client files.

Don't wipe the hard drive. Buy a new one for the computer and an external hard
drive case for the old one.
Do a fresh install on the new drive. Hook up the old drive in the case and
access it as you need to.
Saves a ton of time and worries about whether you copied everything you needed.

open up a command prompt window and run chkdsk on your main HD

I spoke with an exceptional Adobe tech support person and we determined that maybe my epson printer set as default was causing the
wierdness....anyway, he was quite helpful. We dumped all adobefnt.lst files, did msconfig, did a selective boot, changed default
printer to adobe ps and it loaded just great. Glad I did not have to do a clean install.

It sure is good to be back in 11. :)
