Author brush

OK, this is really stupid, but I've been trying to make a brush and can't
get it to work. I want a series of crossed lines (like x's) evenly spaced
and the background transparent. At this point, I'm willing to give up the
transparent part, if I could just get the x's to work. I can make a brush,
but when I apply it to a stroke, I get the exact number of x's on my object
that my brush has instead of a repeating pattern. I've been looking for a
tutorial on it and haven't had luck there either. Ideally, I think this
should be a border style brush. Can anyone lead me to help?

Thanks, IA.

See, I KNEW it was stupid. I was trying to make it too hard. All I needed
was one "x" design and increase the spacing in the brush properties box!
sheesh! This happens everytime I post something here. I spend two hours
trying to figure it out, post a message and then figure it out myself in
another 5 minutes. You guys must be telepathic!
